Castle Island at the entrance to
Boston's inner harbor is the oldest continuously fortified site in
British North America having had a military presence from 1634 through World War II

The current Fort Independence, the eighth fortification to occupy the site was commissioned to active duty in 1851.  Castle Island, once a half mile offshore is now connected to the mainland and may be accessed by foot or by car.

Fort Independence
is closed for the winter
The fort will reopen for tours on
Memorial Day Weekend 2015


The fort is not available for 
private parties or events.

Pets are not allowed in the fort
with the exception of CERTIFIED service dogs.

Proper footware must be worn
while touring the fort.

Children under 16 years of age
must be accompanied by an adult

Fort Independence is handicap accessable on the lower level only
